Melissa is a Sioux City native and graduated from Sergeant Bluff-Luton High School in 2006. She received her undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Criminal Justice from Iowa State University where she graduated magna cum laude in 2011. Melissa received national recognition when she was selected as a member of the 2011 USA TODAY All-USA College Academic Second Team. In 2013, Melissa was named Outstanding Air National Guard Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year for the entire Air National Guard.

Melissa graduated with honors from the University of South Dakota School of Law in 2015, where she was the Managing Editor of the South Dakota Law Review, Volume 60. Melissa published an article entitled Stalking and Cyberstalking in the United States and Rural South Dakota: Twenty-Four Years After the First Legislation, 59 S.D. L. REV. 392 (2014). She also worked as a research assistant for Law Professor Wendy Hess. During law school, Melissa competed at national competitions with the USD Trial Team and co-founded the Criminal Justice Education Project.

After graduation, Melissa served as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Christopher McDonald of the Iowa Court of Appeals. Melissa is licensed to practice law in the state courts of Iowa and South Dakota and the U.S. District Court for the District of South Dakota. Her memberships include the American Bar Association, South Dakota Bar Association, Iowa State Bar Association, Woodbury County Bar Association, Iowa Organization of Women Attorneys (IOWA), and Sioux City Growth Organization (SCGO).

In her spare time, Melissa enjoys reading and practicing yoga.
